When Susan’s first child was born, she bought a non-ergonomic carrier from the store and began her babywearing journey. Having her child close to her felt natural to her and was practical too, but by the time he was 15 pounds, her back was in agony! After a neighbor sold her a ring sling, Susan realized how much more comfortable baby carriers could be. After her second child was born, she began experimenting with her own ring sling pattern. Around that time, her father was doing humanitarian work in Guatemala. The Gmeiners had him bring back handwoven fabric and found that it was a perfect match for their ring slings--light, soft, and airy! In 1996, Maya Wrap was open for business. Through three children and one grandchild, Maya Wrap ring slings have helped not only the Gmeiners, but countless families to live, work, and bond with their babies. Now, over 20 years later, Maya Wrap’s signature fabric is still handwoven by that same weaver today, and the original Bright Stripes colorway is still as popular as ever!
Meet the faces behind Maya Wrap!
Susan Gmeiner, owner and CEO, has her degrees in math and meteorology! She and her husband call North Carolina home and are proud to have three wonderful sons and three grandchildren in the Maya Wrap family. Susan is devoted to baby carrier safety. As a charter member of the Baby Carrier Industry Alliance, she also serves the Board of Directors as treasurer. She is a founding member of the ASTM Committee for the Sling Carrier Standard and has chaired the task group on infant positioning. In her spare time, Susan enjoys giving back to the community, attending church, and reading. Susan’s favorite carrier is the ComfortFit ring sling because it’s so comfortable, and she loves the Luis and Emerald Forest colorways.
Dana Lawson, customer service and wholesale manager, lives in North Carolina with her husband (and high school sweetheart!) Mark. Dana has been a part of Maya Wrap since her graduation from high school in 2003. She loves to travel and explore new places. Dana has many nieces and nephews that she’s carried in her slings over the years! She has a soft spot for her ComfortFit ring sling in Verdant especially the color, but really loves her coral Zypora ring sling as well.
Becky Patouhas, social media specialist, says her favorite part of her job is a tie between seeing all the cute baby pictures and helping parents get that “I can’t believe I can hold my baby AND eat!” moment. A first-generation American and mom of two small boys, she and her family live in Michigan, where she enjoys volunteering with her local babywearing group. Becky loves her Zypora meh dais (she has two!) because they’re so cushy on her shoulders. She always has a Lightly Padded ring sling in her purse because she loves the soft padding, and she thinks Isle of Skye is the best colorway out there!
